The Law Society estimates that there are approximately 41,000 lawyers in Ontario. In order to be qualified to practice law in Ontario, lawyers must must have
- graduated from a common law program at a Canadian law school, where they would then be granted a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), or
- received a Certificate of Qualification issued by the National Committee on Accreditation if they completed their legal studies outside of Canada
Before they can participate in the lawyer licensing process. The lawyer licensing process in Ontario requires that applicants
- pass two examinations, the solicitors and barristers examinations,
- complete a ten-month internship called articling, where the applicant learns about the practice of law under the guidance of an Ontario lawyer, and
- complete an online Professional Responsibility and Practice course during the ten-month articling period.
